Cities use ordinances to regulate development in critical areas. These areas contain steep slopes; wetland, fish, and wildlife habitat; frequently flood; or are important to supplying clean water. The City of Stevenson asked BergerABAM to update the City's critical area ordinance and prepare associated geographic information system (GIS) maps. Staff reviewed the existing ordinance for consistency with the current Growth Management Act, completed an exhaustive review of literature regarding best available science, and authored the ordinance update. The firm also completed a local inventory of wetland and streams in the City; assisted categorizing and mapping sensitive resources; and created environmental GIS layers, including wetlands, streams, and geological hazards. This information became part of crafting the updated ordinance.
