Washington law requires cities to update their comprehensive plans periodically, and the City of Centralia asked BergerABAM to assist with its most recent update. BergerABAM revised the plan's land use, housing, and economic development elements and prepared maps for residential, commercial, and industrial development based on 20-year population projections. A vacant lands assessment was also prepared to determine locations and comprehensive plan designations for residential, commercial, and industrial areas for development and redevelopment to accommodate 20-year forecasted residential and employment needs. This work involved the preparation of comprehensive plan designation criteria and global information systems mapping to determine net available residential lands and the appropriate locations for commercial and industrial areas. The comprehensive public involvement planned and implemented by BergerABAM included open houses, citizen mailers, and Planning Commission and City Council workshops.
