The MGM CityCenter, a “city within city,” was developed through a joint venture between MGM Mirage and Dubai World. The $8.5 billion mixed-used property consists of seven major buildings encompassing 17 million square feet of hotel rooms; high-end residences; casino/gaming areas; convention spaces; meeting rooms; and an exclusive retail, fine dining, and entertainment district.
When MGM Mirage envisioned this unique concept of a high-end, mixed-use development, they realized the need to connect the different properties within CityCenter and adjoining MGM properties via a people mover system. The $65 million state-of-the-art, 2,100-foot-long automated people mover (APM) system connects the Crystal complex at the heart of the CityCenter to the Monte Carlo Hotel and Casino to the south and the Bellagio Hotel and Casino to the north. The electric-powered APM, designed for sustainability, is in stride with other CityCenter components that received LEED certification for extensive use of green technology. The APM system can carry up to 3,000 people per hour in each direction and travels at a speed of 23 miles per hour.
