South 200th Link Extension Parking Garage

SeaTac, Washington

The BergerABAM team won the competition to design a parking garage for the extension of Link light rail from the Sea-Tac Airport station to a new station at South 200th Street. As the design manager for this Sound Transit project, we oversee the design-build construction of a parking garage for more than a thousand vehicles, a large public transit plaza with a retail component, surface parking, and sites for potential future development. Nestled between the Des Moines Creek Trail and Angle Lake, the parking garage is a gateway to the City of SeaTac.

Three streets access the seven-level structure, which connects to transit via a pedestrian tunnel on the second level. The public plaza, on the third level, includes passenger drop-off and para-transit loading areas, an urban plaza highlighting the entry to the new South Link station, and retail spaces. The plaza also links the elevated guideway and station with the rest of the site features. Unique seat walls, pathways, paving, planting beds, and urban design features engage transit users as they move through the space, creating quiet places for social interaction and sunny places to enjoy a cup of coffee. The large size and flexible design of the plaza make it hospitable to public gatherings like festivals and a farmers’ market.

In addition to fulfilling its transportation role, the plaza design maximizes the integration of public art. Because our site designers work closely with artists to create, integrate, and install public art as a fundamental element, the curvilinear geometries of this plaza design complement the patterns and forms chosen by the artist.
